The New York Medical Unit (NYMU) in MSF New York is part of MSF-USA and is also part of the MSF Operational Center Paris (OCP).  It provides technical support for a variety of infectious and non-communicable diseases (NCD) and supports clinical and operational research in projects around the world.






The NYMU intern will support MSF operational research activities, with a focus on NCD-related research as well as research publications and training on other topics. The intern will jointly report to the NCD Advisor and the Clinical Research and Publications Advisor.


NCD work will involve supporting the rollout of operational research studies on NCDs, (Kenya, Bangladesh, Uganda, Liberia), including scientific literature reviews, some analysis of routine data, and summarizing/reporting, with support from the NCD Advisor.


Other research coordination / publications support will include analyses of MSF-OCP’s publishing tendencies (including of journals used, altmetrics scores (among other impact indicators), diversity of authorship profiles, and other characteristics as needed).  The intern will also assist in the creation of online trainings (via the MSF Tembo platform) on research related topics.


Depending on time allowance, the intern may assist with other technical literature reviews for other medical dossiers as needed for the other MSF Medical Departments and/or Units.







  • Analysis of routine NCD data from some projects
  • Scientific literature reviews of available evidence, on various medical topics, to inform concept notes, research protocols, and peer reviewed publications.
  • Support on study concept note
  • Analysis of MSF-OCP peer-review journal articles’ impact using altmetrics score, journal impact factor, and MSF ReMIT info (when available) to assess publication impact
  • Support for research-related trainings for frontline clinicians (on topics such as scientific writing/reading, UpToDate, performing literature reviews, other as needed)
  • Other support to the NYMU as needed






  • Medical or public health degree, training in epidemiology/research methods
  • Experience with routine data analysis
  • Familiarity with NCDs or internal medicine
  • Experience performing scientific literature reviews
  • Past authorship in peer-reviewed journal articles in reputable medical journals
  • Ability to summarize large amounts of information into concise briefing papers, memos, or recommendations
  • Ability to work and collaborate with a team remotely
  • Fluent English (written and spoken) a must, French fluency (written and spoken) highly desirable
