Director of Development

Date: Nov 23, 2022

Location: New York City, NY, US, 10006

Organization: Doctors Without Borders | Médecins Sans Frontières

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international humanitarian organization that delivers impartial medical care to people affected by conflict, epidemics, disasters, or exclusion from health care in over 70 countries.

We welcome candidates who bring a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences to join us in working toward MSF’s common mission.

Department

Our dynamic Development Department is responsible for raising over $700 million annually in private funds to meet the financial needs of our organization and to enable the independence of our humanitarian action.

Our Development Department includes five donor segments (Mass; Mid-Level; Major Gifts; Foundations & Corporations; and Planned Giving) as well as Research & Analytics, Channels and CRM Strategy functions.  The fundraising team is composed of almost 90 staff, mostly based in New York City, responsible for engaging the support of more than one million donors across the US.

Role

The Director of Development (DoD) will be a proven leader who is deeply motivated by the goal of MSF to save lives and alleviate suffering through medical action and bearing witness – the central pillars of our social mission.

The DoD will have a proven track record of increasing private revenue for nonprofits during times of economic disruption and increasing competition within the philanthropic sector. The DoD will bring the vision, experience, curiosity, creativity, resourcefulness, and enthusiasm to support a well-recognized international aid agency to elevate supporter engagement and loyalty.

Reporting to the Executive Director and as an integral member of the senior Management Team (MT), the DoD will embrace challenges and change to support the evolution of a high performing organization working in a rapidly changing world. They will be responsible for providing progressive thought and practice leadership to drive MSF-USA fundraising strategy to a new revenue floor of $950 million and beyond in the coming five years.

The DoD is responsible for developing secure and diversified private income streams by meeting donors where they are with engaging and compelling stories and personal/meaningful experiences that demonstrate the need for their support. Showing our impact creates loyalty. In particular, the Development Director will develop multi-year fundraising strategies and annual plans that build a broad base of support and promote predictable, and mostly unrestricted giving, in a cost-efficient way based on high ethical standards. The DoD leads the process of forecasting revenue for MSF USA and setting investment targets.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Serve as a member of the senior leadership Management Team of MSF-USA, and actively participate in movement-wide fundraising discussions at an international level.

  • Ensure that fundraising plans and activities are aligned with MSF-USA’s strategic goals and objectives and reflect polices, values, and culture of the organization.

  • In collaboration with key stakeholders, lead the development of fundraising strategies that include annual and multiyear fundraising goals and objectives to cultivate new donors and broaden the awareness of MSF throughout the US; work closely with the Director of Finance on revenue and expense forecasting, and with their counterparts in MSF operations domestically and globally on proposal development and donor engagement; regularly update multi-year revenue projections and coordinate strategies and implementation with other key stakeholders to contribute to the predictability and sustainability of funding of MSF globally.

  • Lead and oversee the implementation of fundraising strategies across all funding streams including Mass; Mid-Level, Major Gifts, Foundations, Corporations and Planned Giving; ensure these strategies meet revenue goals, while ensuring that all initiatives are sustainable from a long-term funding perspective; focus on the dynamics and innovative drive in our Fundraising pyramid, by continuing to steward more than a million current donors and inspire new donors to contribute to MSF-USA with a strong focus on growth and regular giving.

  • Continue to grow a digital-first strategy, while balancing the value of proven channels in Direct Marketing such as direct mail with the need to leverage new options to adapt to changes in donor preferences.

  • Develop internal and external market information and research capabilities for fundraising teams; integrate research into annual and multi-year plans; assure current understanding of philanthropic trends; continuously explore and adapt proven and new approaches; and successfully position MSF-USA as a leader in the humanitarian relief sector.

  • Drive transformation of the organizations’ digital capabilities and engagement approaches for a digital-social-mobile world; expand digital engagement and personalization through optimization of Salesforce CRM with integrated and properly mapped audience data.

  • Partner with the Director of Communications to advance shared organizational goals, digital approaches, and will use data analytics to inform planning, investment and learning; together, oversee brand communication, and ensure that MSF-USA’s messages to supporters accurately describe the crises to which MSF responds, MSF’s program activities, and its humanitarian challenges (advocacy).

  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with the MSF-USA Board of Directors and Board of Advisors; enlist and motivate Board members to actively participate in fundraising activities as well as advocate for the organization and its programs.

  • Represent MSF-USA on key international working groups and initiatives, collaborating on fundraising policies, practices and strategies and will develop strong working relationships with counterparts in specific MSF entities to advance global fundraising goals.

  • Lead by example with Diversity, Equity, Inclusion (DEI) and antiracism principles inspiring the internal work culture and the way we portray MSF to our supporters; champion a more diverse and interdependent Development organization; build a Development DEI strategy and KPIs for diversifying our donor audiences that aligns with the organizational strategy and creating a sense of belonging for our diverse audiences.
